Another busy day, inc looking after my little birds. I let out the two young pigeons for a fly around this lovely day, much to their surprise I think. Its time they began to explore the world outside the aviary now that theyre growing up. Ami was back within the hour but Im afraid that Cher is spending the night up on the roof of our house. She came back at about 9pm and I just couldnt get her down to the aviary. Hunger may drive her down in the morning. Earlier I expressed concern about Glo the coal tit not attempting to feed himself. Well today there was a little breakthrough. I noticed that if I gave him something to eat that was too big to swallow he would hold it between his toes and peck at it until it was suitable. Also today, if he dropped food he would immediately hop down to pick up and eat. Im thrilled about this as its another step towards him feeding himself. Ive put feeders if food in the cage from the start but, with a fluttery sparrow in there, its hard to tell if any has been eaten. Im pleased with Glos progress today. The little sparrow, Huw, remains very nervous still. Hes always escaping through the cage door when Im feeding them. This time after a frantic search if the kitchen, I found him hiding in a plant! The two house martins have names now after the children who found them_Egan and Esme. Today I moved them to a cage in our shed to give them more room to develop. I draped an old towel on the back of the cage and folded up a hammock type pouch for them to hide in or sleep there. All this is to make it a little more natural for them as their little stumpy legs and strong claws are made for climbing and clinging vertically. Of course I shall continue to hand feed them there. They seemed to enjoy the freedom and soon climbed up near the top so they could look around. Ill leave you tonight with a picture of the evening sun shining on two white bums whilst the little birds were fast asleep. Nos da everyone.
