Another commanding victory saw Celtic return to the top of the league, and Motherwell will wonder how they managed to leave Celtic Park having conceded only four. The first twenty minutes witnessed Motherwell rarely venture out of their half, and they seemed content to invite Celtic onto them, perhaps hoping to get a goal on the break. But by the time Virgil Van Dijk opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 26th minute, Celtic had already firmly stamped their authority on the game, and it seemed but a matter of time until more goals came. And come they did, with Leigh Griffiths scoring another header just before the break, a fitting reward for an energetic performance. Celtic had to wait until the 76th minute for the third, an excellent drive from right back Mikael Lustig, on at half-time for Adam Matthews. Lustig scored his second and the pick of the bunch with a skillful diving header five minutes from time, and came within a whisker of an unlikely hat-trick when he rattled the bar following an intelligent Kris Commons free-kick. So, Celtic fans satisfied themselves with 4 when it could easily have been double that, and the side march on to Saturday’s game away at Ross County, before the much awaited League Cup Semi-Final tie against a certain Championship side. On evidence of tonight’s performance, Celtic will be difficult to beat. Celtic 4 – 0 Motherwell
