Another composer that died too young; Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born on this date in 1710 and he died a short 26 years later of TB. Pergolesi left an impressive oeuvre. He wrote some of the best examples Italian comic opera in the eighteenth century. When these were performed in Paris it caused a rift in the opera world between the between supporters of serious French opera by Lully and Rameau and supporters of new Italian comic opera. Pergolesi was also a highly respected composer of church music, exemplified by his remarkable Stabat Mater which was composed in the last year of his life.
