Another day, another Guardian article about bankers in which one entitled douchebag is taken as representative of the entire industry, and the comments are left inexplicably open. The result? The usual string of death threats and hate speech. If you replaced the word banker in most of these comments with, say, Muslim, you might understand why this stuff is so offensive. There are a million people in this country who work in financial services. Most of them are not even remotely connected with the causes of the financial crisis, in the same way as most Muslims are not even remotely connected to terrorism. Yet the lynch mob mentality consistently fails to distinguish between good bankers and bad bankers. Bad bankers do exist. One of them just about ruined our lives. But the vast majority of people working in banking are decent, conscientious, very hard-working and wouldnt have the first clue how to dodge income tax. Its time for the constant vilification to stop.
