Another day is in the bag! I got my P90X on and got my plank in for the day! I also had a conversation with one of my people that I would like to address, because its something I struggle with myself and am sure some of you do too. We were discussing a concern this person has as to whether or not they will be able to progress as quickly with their planks as the challenge calendar requires. My answer was you modify. This persons response was I dont like that. I understand the feeling. Im terrible about seeing anything less than the image in my mind as...well....less. One of the things Tony Horton says frequently in P90X (paraphrasing here) is to remove your ego. Modified push-ups are frequently referred to as girl pushups. They are not girl push-ups, there is no such thing as girl pushups. They are modified. And EVERYONE modifies their workouts here and there. You cannot move forward if you refuse to work within your bodies abilities, and you most certainly cannot move forward in a healthy manner if you are allowing your ego to lead your progress. I am not saying this from a place of judgement, but from a place of experience. I have way, way, way too many injuries to my body and I would way too many of those injuries were incurred due to stubborn pride and ego. I wish that I had LISTENED to what my body was telling me more when I was younger, so that I wouldnt have to struggle with pain and restrictions now! Modifications allow our bodies to become stronger, they allow our progress to continue forward, and they keep us safe. I use modifications in ALL of my workouts and I will continue to do so. The competition aspect of challenges can be fun, but its more important to me that all of you (whether you are in the challenge group or not) are taking your health and abilities into account and practicing good form above all else. I would rather you do 12 10-second planks with good form than 1 120-second plank with bad form. And trust me, so would your body.
