Another eventful couple of days for Eric. Although his energy and awareness have been improving, other statuses have not. He needed a blood transfusion Tuesday and had his belly drained Wednesday. Right away his oxygenation improved but he was in the ICU again because everyone anticipated low blood pressures due to the massive fluid shift from paracentisis. It is great that he is NOT on a ventilator but there is always the bonus bit of anxiety that comes with staying on that unit. The hope is that he will be back in his regular room today. This week he has been both the most disoriented (due to post-intubation delirium) AND the most lucent we have ever seen him in his entire life. Eric has always had a "distinctive" state of mind but he managed to have several astonishingly clear conversations with Mike and me over the last couple of days. This was an extraordinary surprise and an absolute blessing. I will even go so far as to call it a miracle because in his almost 10 years of life, he has never seemed this authentic and aware. It may seem sad but it is also wonderful to hear him say that he wants to come home. I believe that will help inspire him to carry on. All of the notes and texts from everyone help too. We wil alll enjoy rereading them in the days to come.
