Another excerpt from my Franklin Homepage candidate profile re: Common Core: We need to create an environment where teachers can teach. We must first restore local control and file a resolution rejecting Common Core. A resolution is the first step needed, so Tennessee can join other states and reject this latest overreach of the federal government. We all want high standards for our children. We should ensure those standards are proven, developmentally appropriate and validated by real educators. Opposition to Common Core is not a hot button or national issue. Constituents are voicing concerns, and our board needs to listen to those they represent. As a replacement to Common Core, I would like to see Williamson County conduct a benchmarking study of comparable districts around the country, identify areas of opportunity and determine relevant success gauges. We also need to listen to our teachers and trust their experience to define the path forward out of Common Core and onward to educational excellence.
