Another exciting update from OakZoo ZooKeepers Margaret and Liz in the field in Madagascar! We just returned from a two day trip deep into Ranomafana national forest. It was a 4 hour hike just to get to the site. We captured 7 sifakas, radio collared them, took blood and hair samples and placed microchips in them. Two of them had infants and we had to remove them from their mothers just long enough to get everything done. Thank goodness we had experience with infant squirrel monkeys! We used the constant rocking to keep them calm while their mothers were being processed. The infants went back to their mothers as soon as we were finished with them and all of the sifakas were returned to the forest the same day. The Malagasy veterinarian who was with us said he usually only does 4 lemurs in one day, so we feel very accomplished! Tomorrow we are off to the other side of the river to collar a new group.
