Another father in the office! This really happened in a company - TopicsExpress

Another father in the office! This really happened in a company I worked in. There was a bright junior officer with a US degree in our department, who was just not delivering. Something was obviously wrong. This went on for too long and some thing had to be done. My boss summoned the youngster to his office for a discussion. He asked me to assist him. The boss spoke kindly enquiring what was wrong. The young man did not respond. He tried to probe further but no answer was forthcoming. Finally he said Son, I am old enough to be your father. Think of me as your dad and tell me what is your real problem? The response was staggering. The young man said I have a father at home. Thank you, I do not need one more father in the office. My poor boss looked foolish. I signaled to the boss that I was taking over. I told the youngster Look, I dont know what your real problem is. Frankly I do not care. We are not running a psychiatric clinic here. This is a commercial organization, where each one of us is paid to do his bit. We can worry about each other up to a point only, not beyond. I know that you are capable of better work. You are holding up for some reason best known to you. I am not interested in unraveling your problem but let me give it to you straight. I am giving you three months to shape up or I will ship you out. We are not running a charity show here! Surprisingly, he took my barrage calmly and said Fair enough, I get your point. We parted. He was given his three months. He did not show any improvement. I had him terminated. That was that. He took the dismissal also calmly. Oftentimes, we over estimate our capacity as amateur psychologists The half baked stuff often dished out in Organizational Behavior lectures in B schools and magazine case studies on HR really do not help. I call my theory D-G. Deliver or Get out!
