Another glimpse into the process: Whats happening now? The ten individuals and teams are currently writing their letters to the Academy Nicholl Committee. In the letters the finalists briefly outline their backgrounds and interest in screenwriting and present a story idea or two for a script that might be written during the fellowship year. After all ten letters have been submitted, they are forwarded to committee members. Earlier this week, semifinalist and quarterfinalist contact lists were distributed to Academy member semifinal judges and to industry members who had requested them. Finalist contact information is only released after their letters have been received. Lists will continue to be shared with the industry as more requests arrive. On Thursday, the 12 writers of the 10 finalist screenplays were announced. That has generated a flurry of activity among industry members. Weve received emails and phone calls about the finalists and have noticed that drafts of nine of the ten finalist scripts have appeared on tracking boards. Our guess is that the finalist scripts are being read by dozens, if not hundreds, of industry members. We played no role in the tracking board postings and do not make scripts available outside of the judging process. The Academys finalist announcement has since been picked up by outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline Hollywood, spreading the news even wider.
