Another great afternoon with lots of whales in the area! In addition to some fin whales, there were at least 8 humpbacks as well. For the past few days the whales have been feeding in the same area as the fishing fleet. Lots of small boats around lots of whales! This makes sense-the whales and the large fish being caught all feed on the small baitfish that are so plentiful right now. Here you see Shuffleboard diving under the anchor line of one of the small boats. Shuffleboard and Springboard were deep feeding together, Jibaru was in the area as well as a new whale for us this season-Slingshot. As many of you may know the 2013 was a lean year for whale sightings on Stellwagen Bank. We keep track of all the whales we see each season. I thought you might like to compare the whales weve seen this year (and we still have a month more to go) with last season. What a difference a year makes!!
