Another great day with the Veterans! We were at breakfast at 6:30am, then headed to the buses to start todays adventure. I volunteered (with several others) to help load /unload the Vets on the buses. These tough ol guys and gals are fiercely independent and most didnt like accepting help in the beginning. Soon they realized that we were here to help - not to embarrass them. It gave me a chance to interact with many of them and learn their stories. We do a lot of walking , so many Vets came around to the idea of using wheelchairs, even though they dont use them back home. My Uncle Abby was one of them! He quickly learned that me pushing him around in a wheelchair is pretty handy and saves his energy! I hope he doesnt try this with his wife at home - shell straighten him out quick!!! lol We had great media support on this trip, as well as visits by several Congressmen. All these folks made an effort to make all the Vets feel special. Most of these Heroes dont believe they did anything other than their job during the war. The Honor Flight program and all those that support the program are helping to change their way of thinking. These men and women are more than special - they are Heroes! What I saw today was a group of The Greatest Generation realize that even Super Heroes need a hand sometimes. All of us Guardians are honored to help! :) Btw - we visited the Marine, WWll, Air Force, Vietnam, Korea and Navy memorials today! Ill tell ya about that tomorrow! ;)
