Another great post from Liam Deegan. from Liam Deegan s son Excellent letter to Enda Kenny from the 24 year old Son of Liam Deegan Dear Mr Kenny I’m writing to you to clarify a few points that have been playing on my mind. Maybe it’s your headmaster past back west, but you seem to view the Irish people as unruly students disrupting your lessons. Well, allow me to attempt to teach you a lesson. Your government has made a song and dance of our 10.6% unemployment rate, down from 15% in 2012. An awful pity that this is skewed completely by the average annual emigration of 80,000, of which 47% have been third-level graduates: quite the “brain drain”. Your government and European Big Brothers have been incessantly vocal about our 3.6% GDP growth rate, in a transparent attempt to make us the poster boys of austerity in Europe. But celebrating our growth in this way is like admiring the ballroom in the Titanic when you see our debt/GDP ratio of 114%. Repayments of this “sovereign” debt will last a generation or two (presumably with austerity budgets for our children to endure also). The less said about Irish Water the better: already a financial sinkhole and bureaucratic nightmare which exemplifies all that’s wrong with your administration. Weve had seven years of austerity budgets now, saddling citizens with tax after tax, levy after levy and every conceivable method of wringing money from the Irish people. Make no mistake Mr Kenny, were a tough people; weve been through worse and we could endure this, if it were for the right reasons. It’s not – it never was. This economic quagmire is the legacy of the Irish government’s catastrophic guarantee to the banks: the assurance that Irish taxpayers would pay and pay and pay for the reckless, borderline criminal, actions of the dreaded markets and financial institutions. Every country has a breaking point: the war-weariness effect minus the war. When do you imagine well reach that point, Mr Kenny? The opening fissures are there; the massive demonstrations last year shook you and your colleagues into major backtracking over Irish Water. The consensus appears to be that youre incompetent and weak, hopelessly out of your depth and in thrall to the European powers (who are now unquestionably out of ideas on how to turn the EU economy around outside of a €1.1 trillion cash injection). The election is coming, and fast Taoiseach. Do you imagine any result outside of a total annihilation of FG/Labour? Look to what just transpired in Greece if you have any doubts. As it stands, your political legacy amounts to protecting the interests of two poisonous banks, the sacrifice of our financial independence, the relentless battering of the Irish people, and, worst of all, a total lack of anything resembling leadership or backbone at any point in your time as Taoiseach. If the gay marriage referendum passes you will have had one redeeming moment in your political career but thats it. It is a sad indictment of your tenure as a leader. Good luck in the election Mr Kenny but I dont think that we can wait that long for the annihilation of the most destructive government this country has ever seen!
