Another great postseason baseball game; love the defense on both sides, love the strategies of coaching, love the batters especially for the Royals working the pitchers. I think every once in a while, though, of one of the great changes in baseball and what it might signify: the disappearance of the pitched complete game. When I was born, over a third of all games ended in complete games by pitchers; this year under 3 percent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_game. The link goes into all the usual reasons, but I keep thinking something has been lost and I do miss the complete games, all hail Catfish Hunter, and I think money and risk of losing monied pitchers, more than strategies of winning, or the movement of greater hitting strength as a factor in that strategy, probably has a lot to do with it. In some ways it seems to have ironically to me reduced the role of the reliever and that talent and focus as it has become more of the bullpen with all the subcategories and use of relievers. Or just my nostalgia, but then what is baseball without it.
