Another great review for the Lobster Theory, this time from a customer in Maryland! Jazz Proverbs - a review of The Lobster Theory By Rodney Laster on November 5, 2014 If you are reading the reviews trying to decide whether you should buy The Lobster Theory, then read no further. BUY THIS BOOK! The amount of information about music in general and jazz specifically is scary. The concepts are presented in a deceptively simple way with cute little drawings which kinda fool you into thinking that the concepts are not important. Nothing could be further from the truth. Each chapter presents an important PROVERB, ie. a truth based on common sense or practical experience. The chapters should be read repeatedly to allow the concept to sink in and for you to start incorporating them into your playing. An example is the chapter on practicing. We all know we should practice everyday, but do you really know WHY? It is in the BOOK. This book is a steal! It would take years of lessons, classes, workshops, masterclasses, & jazz camps to learn or even just hear many of the concepts presented in this book. It is great to be able to slowly read the concept, look at the graphic, and then think about how to use the new tool/info to make your playing better. This book also proves a point, musicians THINK differently! Musicians react and interact with the world differently. Greg describes sound in terms of colors, tastes, moods, layers, patterns and shapes. The concepts are way deeper than just memorize this scale or lick and play it over that chord or progression. If you master the concepts, you will be able to play what is in your head, to express yourself musically! Practice makes perfect...
