Another great use for spent substrate it to build outdoor mushroom beds. As an edible landscaper, this form of cultivation is right up my alley. Some good cultures to use are your variety of Oysters and the King Stropharia mushrooms. Other fungi can be used as well, so play around and see what works best for you. Again, I suggest you chop your straw first, and it wouldnt hurt to soak and drain it before building you bed. You can use straw, wood chips, or a combination of both mixed. If you use straw (mixed or straight), I suggest topping off the bed with couple inches of soaked and drained mulch to weigh down your straw and hold moisture in the bed.
