Another historian pointed out some very interesting statistics. Slavery existed as legal under the United States for 89 years. The United States declared slavery illegal in the Confederate States 2 years before it declared it illegal in the loyal Union states Slavery existed under the Confederate States of America for less that 5 years. The United States has been slavery free for 149 years. During the first vote in 1865, Delaware and New Jersey voted against the 13th Amendment and freeing the slaves. Slavery was not officially abolished in the United States until almost 8 months after Lincolns death. Things to think about: We have been a slave free nation longer than a slave holding nation. We find the Confederate Flag offensive but not the 1776 Betsy Ross Flag nor the one that flew over Fort McHenry during the war of 1812, though both of the latter were symbols of a slave holding nation.
