Another impeachment drama is gradually unfolding in Nassarawa - TopicsExpress

Another impeachment drama is gradually unfolding in Nassarawa state but unlike the Nyakos case , Almakura has openly accused the presidency of plotting and inducing his impeachment. Is it a coincidence that only APC governors are so far facing impeachment threats or even being impeached and at a time that the life span of this incumbent administration is approaching its exit point? .The impeachment saga , going by the pattern , certainly have some partisan coloration. The presidency may not be wholly responsible because unless grounds exist to sustain allegations contain in an impeachment notice , it shall not succeed . Its not a matter of course , the governors too must have provided reasons for it either by their actions or inactions. I am not , in any way , ruling out impeachments borne out of treacherous gimmicks to settle sinister political motives. We must however concede that there are always two sides to coin. Impeachment is a legitimate power vested in the respective legislative houses but it should be a last resort when other constitutional avenues have failed to affect the desired executive attitude. What is most disheartening , is the vulnerability of legislators to influence by some powerful political class to initiate impeachment against perceived foes in partisan interest. I am sure , if Nyako had avoided the bravery of accusing the presidency of ineptitude and tacit involvement in the menace of Book Haram , the PDP dominated house in Adamawa state may not have had any reason to even contemplate his impeachment in spite of the allegations of financial impropriety against him. The deployment of the army to the assembly at the climax of the saga was not just a routine security measure but additional evidence of whose scripts is being played by the intellectually impoverished members of the house. They threw decency and the aspirations of the people to the winds to hurriedly package the impeachment. At least , by the constitutional provision , they have up to fourteen days to thoroughly consider the report of the panel but in less than 48 hours the process was concluded. The entire process was premeditated and manipulated to create semblance of compliance with the procedure set out by the constitution. The Almakuras case may follow the same pattern unless miracle happens to truncate the process or if he bows to the pressure of changing the political equation in the state in favour of the cabals in PDP. So far , his allegations of involvement of the presidency has not been denied even by his kinsman- the information minister and arch political rival-Labaran Maku. The common denominator in the unfolding events is 2015 elections. The target is to silence the opposition in their catchment areas and also use intra- party conflicts to infiltrate their ranks. At least Ali Modu Sheriff has left for PDP and Tom Ikimi is already avoiding major functions of the party over allegation of dominance of Tinubu. Mass defections in Edo state assembly and Oshomole is now entangled in a battle of survival. I expect more of these gimmicks as 2015 approaches but in what way is the Nigerian project being protected by these gladiators. One thing is obvious , for now, burning national issues of insecurity , power failure , unemployment , decadence in our education and health sector etc are being compromised for naked political ambition come 2015. Corruption at all level of government is now like an institution. Where are we heading to as a nation ? Can someone provide me with a candid answer?
