Another interesting yet, IMO, somewhat flawed piece. I think it is inevitable that, given the choice, as we are in this modern age of incredibly short attention spans, rampant narcissism and endless possibilities, that the way consumers prioritize what they will or wont engage with would largely be based on whether or not said consumer is given compelling indications of how a product or content will fit into their life and, at least momentarily, make it better. One of the problems overlooked in this piece is that, ironically, independent artists who actually are capable of creating emotionally resonant, compelling music of artistic integrity and depth often times misunderstand marketing to be advertising. They fatigue even die hard fans by spending most of their time drilling awareness of their musics availability into peoples heads when they should be using their creativity, understanding of the human condition and understanding of the linear narrative form to offer the potential paying consumers a meaningful place for the music they make in the context of the consumers life. People in marketing understand this and it always strikes me as somewhat strange and tragic that so few great independent artists these days seem to. If you are able to understand songwriting as a narrative form, and view your career and life trajectory in such terms, why not put yourself in the shoes of your potential consumer and ask yourself the questions that give shape to their narrative so you can better express your musics place in that narrative?
