Another item I stumbled upon this weekend, a video to a brilliant but forgotten gem from the cut-out bin, I Advanced Masked. An artsy little romp from Andy Summers of the Police and Robert Fripp, of....just look him up if need be. This brought me back to when I was a kid and my friend Steve Hammer and I would comb the record stores for choice stuff. Murmur was generally the first stop on the way, and I picked up this album on one of those excursions. I remember it was in the used vinyl section in a plastic sleeve. I took it out to notice the cover was made from a textured paper conducive to fine art printing, which is what it looked like. I knew both musicians and was intrigued to what the music sounded like. The New Wave muscle of Andy Summers and his work with the Police, who were at their peak at the time of this recording, combined with the avant-garde and forward thinking Robert Fripp, also in peak form from a long trail of amazing contributions with the likes of Brian Eno, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and the Talking Heads. As for the song, I immediately loved its synthed out groove and cinematic vibe. Car chase like rhythm and each guitarist lets loose a barrage of solos with style and passion. Check out the video, dated a bit, but it looks cool. The threads stand up big time. Certainly pairs well with Robert Palmer and Duran Durans image during the same period. New Romantic even? ; ) youtube/watch?v=AOiuh2Upa8s
