Another knee injury ... good thing I have Wolverine-like healing powers and Carlo Chans expertise/scornful looks to speed along the recovery. I remember being a white belt and having a purple belt friend of mine complain about his chronic back pain and tell me, Thats Jiu-Jitsus dirty little secret, what no one likes to talk about, itll take either your neck, your back, or your knees. The more you love it, the more you do it, the more it utterly destroys your body Fast forward about a decade later, now a Brown belt, full-time teacher/coach and experienced competitor, Ive had quite the impressive number of knee injuries (enough to know that last night, while Im limping a bit today, was nothing more than a sprain) there have been some close-calls but thankfully never anything requiring the BIG S (knock on wood) Its always weird to realize when you are finally on the other side of the spectrum and how my first thought and sentiment wasnt resentment for the activity or fear of what its done to my body, but more anxiety over when Id be able to train again in earnest. Its only now that I feel like Im even beginning to understand Jiu-Jitsu better and starting to create my own way, I want to keep that flow going :) I dont think I could ever adequately express how much Ive gotten from Jiu-Jitsu or the meaning it has in my life. Its something worth certain sacrifices, but of course, I still need a relatively healthy body to keep doing it as long as possible. I wouldnt trade in any of the injuries just like I would never trade in any of the positives Ive gotten from it. It doesnt work that way, they go hand in hand (yin/yang) I realize its the injuries that have always re-focused and re-invigorated me. Its always amazing how the threat of having something taken away from you will make you realize how much you truly love it.
