Another low for Australia in negotiating with Cambodia to resettle refugees (people). It was not long ago for Cambodia that they were home to one of the worst genocides in history, and the effects are still felt in the generally impoverished nation. Why is it Australia keeps on going to its poorest neighbours to resettle people? Cambodia, Nauru, Papua and New Guinea, East Timor. Where next? Sudan? Chad? Cambodia has high levels of corruption, high levels of extreme poverty... Other than Cambodias Government, tempted by a quid for Cambodia, most Cambodians are stunned by wealthy Australias bent to remain a citadel. Virak Ou, chairman of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights, said Australia is irresponsible, a more accurate word would be inhumane. “We mistreated our own people and have failed to protect the human rights of our own people … we don’t have the capacity or the will,” said Mr Ou. “There’s no reason for Australia to believe that Cambodia will protect the rights of refugees, which to me is very irresponsible of Australia.”
