Another message from our wonderful Rita! Tapering Reducing your training volume before a big race is necessary to help your muscles repair themselves, boost your energy stores, and recover mentally from a training cycle. Tapering before your race can be challenging. You may you feel tired, irritable, sluggish, restless, and antsy. The physically demanding part of your training is over, and now its time to focus on resting and mentally preparing yourself for the big day. Reviewing the race course, focusing on race day strategy, and visualizing yourself crossing the finish line. Focus on making healthy nutrition choices and hydrating. Dont over hydrate as this can throw off your electrolyes. Your pee should be the color of lemonade and not totally clear. Try to enjoy the tapering phase of your training. Let your body rest and get ready for a successful race! Steve Prefontaine The Oregon native and University of Oregon runner was born January 25, 1951 in Coos Bay, Oregon. He is known as one of Americas greatest running legends. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident at the age of 24. He trained under Bill Bowerman (Nike founder) at the University of Oregon, graduated in 1974, and earned 7 NCAA titles in the process. Four in cross country and three in the 3-mile race in track. His collegiate records of the three mile at 12:53.4 and six mile at 27:09.4 still stand. He was also American record holder for all the races between 2,000 and 10,000 meters and between 2 miles and 6 miles. He placed 4th in the 5k race at the 1972 Munich Olympics Steve also volunteered his time at Roosevelt Junior High in Oregon and at the Oregon State Prison where he started a running club. To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. Steve Prefontaine
