Another movie today, this time Evan Almighty with some kids from our youth group. Unlike the previous Bruce Almighty this one is really good. Imagine a man, an idealist, who gets elected to Congress and God appears to him and tells him to build an ark. Imagine that man trying to explain to his wife and three sons why he is acting so weird, why animals start following him around by twos, trying to keep his respectability in Congress. Then imagine the Congressman is Steve Carrell. It is a ridiculous movie on so many levels but it is very funny and it is theologically decent. You cant expect lofty theological standards on such a movie but this one keeps surprising the viewer with excellent observations. Morgan Freeman plays the role of God and it could hardly have better done except by the Original. John Goodman is the thoroughly nasty evil Congressman. This is maybe from a decade ago, but if you missed it when it came out, rent it. It is worthwhile. Lots of stuff worth talking about.
