Another observation that happened to me a few weeks ago at a local park showed me that if you keep watching people will surprise you. My seven year old daughter and I rode our bikes to the park on an especially warm early winter day. There were lots of families at the park and I watched our bikes while my daughter played on the crowded playground. I noticed immediately a mom smoking a cigarette leaning over the playground fence and she had on very short shorts and high heel boots. Honestly, my first thought was to text my friend saying you should see what Im seeing at the park. Instead I kept watching and I saw her three kids and husband playing and he was pushing his kids and others on a spinning wheel. He was actively engaged with them while I sat away not interacting with my daughter. And I have pushed that spinning wheel before, its not easy. I usually get dizzy. He kept on doing it with no complaint. Maybe he wanted to text his friend about the mom on her phone not playing with her second grader. Ha ha! Then younger kids wanted to get on and it was pretty full. The mom put out her cigarette--came and helped the husband and included everyone in the playground who wanted to join in the fun--including my daughter. So I finally left the bikes, and offered to help push the spinning wheel. Certainly my daughter had no thoughts about the lady with the short shorts. Living in this space made for a much happier day.
