Another of our favorite videos from 2014 is this one about the restoration of Saint Francis Church and Monastery in Manchester, England, an exceptional example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Known locally as Gorton Monastery, the building was designed by Edward Pugin for a community of Franciscans and built between 1866 and 1872. After operating for more than 100 years, attendance dwindled and the building was shuttered in the 1980s. Watch listing in 1998 and 2000 spurred a monumental restoration endeavor with extraordinary results. In this video, World Monuments Fund Britain’s Jonathan Foyle speaks with the woman who spearheaded the effort. Learn more about the project here: wmf.org.uk/wmf_watch/view/st_francis
