Another of the hospitals here is the Memorial Hospital. It was up on Fort Street and had extensive gardens in front. Founded in 1894 through public subscription. Initially run by the Dominican Nuns but they were replaced in 1901 by career nurses. In 1897 its size was doubled and the cupola entrance added. The wards were built out the back. Remained in public hands until taken nationalised in 1925. The European and Coloured patients were relocated to Bulawayo Central in January 1943. It remained the African hospital and training centre until 1956 when it closed as Mpilo was opened. Later refurbished and refurbished ..... as various government offices from Tac through to the current passport office.
