Another one bites the dust.. Today the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that the $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron Corporation in Ecuador was the product of fraud and racketeering. The ruling finds that Steven Donziger, the lead American lawyer behind the lawsuit against the company, and the Lago Agrio plaintiffs violated the federal RICO Act, committing acts of fraud, extortion, money laundering, wire fraud, FCPA violations, and obstruction of justice in obtaining the Ecuadorian judgment and then trying to cover up their crimes. It prohibits Donziger and his associates from trying to enforce the Ecuadorian judgment in the United States, sending a strong message that it is unenforceable in any jurisdiction around the world that respects the rule of law. This ruling is a resounding victory for Chevron and our stockholders. It confirms that the Ecuadorian judgment against Chevron is a fraud and the product of a criminal enterprise.
