Another one of those truly bizarre fibromyalgia symptoms, pain - TopicsExpress

Another one of those truly bizarre fibromyalgia symptoms, pain sometimes severe, from a simple touch. This kind of pain is called tactile allodynia. Allodynia means a painful response to typically non-painful stimulus, and tactile means touch. This is what makes your clothes hurt when they touch or brush your skin, what makes a sheet feel like sandpaper, make you brace yourself and cringe at hug, feel a pea under a mattress (Im that princess most days) and turns a light touch into searing pain. It comes from a malfunction of specialized nerves, called nociceptors, that sense information about things like temperature and painful stimuli right at the skin. For some reason, our nociceptors start telling our brains that just about any sensation is painful.
