Another piece of advice in Older, Faster, Stronger was the difference between how men & women metabolize nutrients - apparently carb loading doesnt work as well for women as it does for men. If I were a female, Id be less worried about trying to carb load & be much more aggressive with consuming carbs during a run or a race., says one researcher. I find this VERY interesting - my carb loading before a race doesnt mean I eat more food; it means I increase the percentage of carbs Im eating. I noticed if was really retaining water right before my half; it was hard to take my rings off & it normally isnt. Carbs do cause you to retain more water. But heres the interesting thing: long runs can cause your to retain water, too; but immediately after my race I was once again able to easily take off my rings. My hypothesis was that I had burned off those extra carbs.
