Another positive letter to the editor in the Californian - TopicsExpress

Another positive letter to the editor in the Californian today! A VOTE FOR PHILLIPS I have never written an endorsement for any candidate in an election before. However, recently I saw a hit-piece delivered in District 2 concerning Supervisorial candidate and former Judge John Phillips, which compels me to speak out. This hit-piece mentioned “examples” of how the Judge was on the bench. From my experience those “examples” do not accurately describe John Phillips. As a practicing attorney for over 40 years, I had many cases with John Philips when he was a prosecutor with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. I found him to be a tough but fair advocate on behalf of the people of this county. I never found him to be other than fair, impartial and non-prejudicial, regardless of the gender, ethnicity or economic status of my clients. When John Phillips was appointed Judge, he carried over that same attitude to the people who appeared before him. Judge Phillips sat on the family law calendar, a challenging and difficult calendar because of the turmoil that engulfs a family during that time of their lives. However, Judge Phillips handled that calendar with compassion for all who came before him regardless of their station in life. He made sure that the calendar had resources available to those who financially needed it to go through the difficult process of a divorce. Yes, he had to make tough decisions in cases, but did so with appropriate application of the law regardless of who the persons were before him. So if you want to look behind the robe, as the hit-piece suggests, I would suggest you begin by talking to those who practiced against him when he was a Deputy District Attorney and those who had the great pleasure to work in his courtroom representing the people of this county who can tell you how fair and just he ran his court room.
