Another positively brilliant student gem: Religion is an incredibly powerful cultural tool, as it can render any sort of action cosmologically significant. Once an action is considered cosmologically significant in someone’s mind, questions of right and wrong become much easier to answer. This is in a discussion of the Holocaust; the student followed it up by saying that neglecting Jesus own Judaism and then blaming the Jews (as a whole) for his death, gave Christians the first shortcut to answering right-and-wrong questions, to justify themselves and condemn the other.
