Another possible explanation for why more intelligent people are more trusting is this: the more intelligent you are, the more likely you are to be able to figure out cause and effect, which may make them less likely to commit certain sorts of crimes and personal infractions. Because we all tend to assume that other people are similar to ourselves, more intelligent people may thus tend to assume that most other people are fairly unlikely to be untrustworthy, while less intelligent people, who may be more impulsive and more likely to commit infractions, may tend to assume that most other people are untrustworthy.
