Another prime example whereby we, the outdoor recreationist, need to be more responsible; by not assuming their mono line is still good after several seasons in the sun (and water). It could cost you that trophy catch, endanger wildlife ( such as this long-bill waterfowl), entangle even bigger game such as endangered sea turtles, friendly porpoises, wrap and entangle boat props (ugh). The easiest way to help, look for those large diameter PVC pipe recycling centers at your local fishing piers . Pier fishing is a major contributor of entanglements due to proximity of each others lines and changing currents. A lot of monofilament manufacturers relieve this recycling material and with coordination and cooperation of conservation groups do their part into molding offshore artificial estuaries/habitats for future fishlings... The one issue I have seen is that these PVC recycling centers are open ended, allowing waterfowl such as this one to enter. IMO a simple coffee lid to keep covered would be prudent, or even better a screw on/off cap ( the lid could become a hazard itself if floating in the bays)?
