Another reminder of how White is considered raceless. This NPR story begins with the statement: Race is at the forefront of the current debate over the police use of deadly force. But one shooting in Wisconsin highlights another factor at play when police shoot civilians — the lack of outside investigation. It is only when race is apparently taken out of the picture because the victim is White that the lack of outside investigation becomes the issue. This article misses out on the most crucial information that this story exposes. By not clearly highlighting how white privilege and wealth were pivotal in creating the new law, this narrative reinforces colorblind ideology and merit based success without considering underlying structural barriers and biases. This story of justice actually emphasizes the greater injustices within our racially-biased legal system.
