Another revolting development in the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural - TopicsExpress

Another revolting development in the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources; coming down the pike at the DNR Board meeting in Hayward August 13 (after they finish touring the fully reclaimed Flambeau mine site). From Midwest Environmental Advocates: On Wednesday, August 13 in Hayward, Wisconsin, the Secretary will ask the state Natural Resources Board to decide on emergency rules to amend NR 150 which implement the Wisconsin Environmental Protection Act. If approved, the proposed rule amendments would make it harder for citizens to request a strategic analysis of activities that may have a significant public health or environmental impact, such as frac sand mining or spreading factory farm manure. Changing the rules would reduce citizen and Natural Resources Board oversight of the DNR’s environmental review process that uses the science and the scrutiny we need to protect our water. Making it harder for citizens to defend our environmental commons isn’t an emergency, nor is it “housekeeping.” Changing the rules threatens our right to challenge pollution problems. Our concerns about frac sand air pollution controls, plans for megafarms in our communities, or even the algae-causing pollutants allowed in wastewater that goes into our streams and lakes, must be heard. Read more about this issue on our blog. MEAs formal comments on the emergency rule change will be available tomorrow.
