He had a prominent Roman nose and the thin lips and spare frame of the ascetic he wasn’t, favoring as he did the afore-mentioned Gitanes and three small cups of cappuccino every day before lunchtime and numerous small glasses of slivovitz every evening from 5 to 7 or later. When he ate, he ate hearty, usually grilled meats lathered in onion sauce. He was a painter himself, and considered that his contributions to Western art were in no way inferior to those of, say, Warhol. He was also a noted, or at least published, authority on such second-rank French Post-Impressionists as Trousseau, Henri-Laval, and Tonnerre, having published three books, one on each--admittedly in Serbian, but there were rumors of an English version of the Tonnerre.
