Another solid Mountain Information Network observation from Chris Rubens: Went up to Sale Mtn for some skiing and sledding. The road up is very whooped but once in the alpine it is relatively un-tracked. The only natural activity we saw was a Size 1 down at the lower lake on a N aspect, that appeared to be a day or two old. It was 80M wide and about 30cm deep and ran 30M on the Jan 15th SH. The Jan 15th Surface hoar layer is very well preserved in the snowpack about 40cm down with 4F+ slab on top. It certainly seems quite stubborn to trigger. Pushing on unsupported pillows resulted in pieces coming off with no propagation. Throughout the day we triggered a couple of isolated pockets nothing bigger that 10M wide. We stuck to smaller terrain features, with no terrain traps, on snow that had seen a lot of human activity in the last few weeks(skiing and sledding). The Jan 15th layer is quite obvious and sledding in the flats seemed like a much better idea than getting on bigger slopes.
