Another tidbit from the newspaper: There was an experiment done in the Boston area with 39 volunteers who had no experience with meditation. 20 were chosen at random to do an 8 week course in meditation while the rest were told the class was full and they had to wait for the next class. After the 8 weeks were up, the participants were invited back to the lab, supposedly to take part in a memory study. Individuals were sent into a waiting room where there were 3 chairs, two of which were occupied by people who were aware of the real experiment. The new individual naturally took the empty chair. A woman on crutches hobbled into the room. She was wearing a boot for an broken foot and she was in obvious pain as she tried to get comfortable standing against the wall. The two who were already seated ignored the woman and continued to read. The newcomer glanced at the other two, and offered his seat to the woman. It was found that of the 20 who took the meditation course, over 50% offered their seat to the injured woman. Of the 19 who did not participate in meditation, only 16% offered the chair. The results of this experiment will be published an upcoming issue of Psychological Science. Meditation works to increase our understanding and awareness at the deepest level of ourselves and others.
