Another tragedy rocks Jerusalem, this time with innocent life taken at a Jewish Synagogue. An utterly sad and devastating tragedy. As one of my Jewish American friends said today--who had to check to make sure it was not her grandfather whod been killed--this is an affirmation that the status quo (e.g. occupation) is not working for either Israelis or Palestinians. And said in words I cannot state better: every death should be mourned, and should strengthen our resolve for de-escalation and peaceful solutions that will enable everyone involved to live in health and dignity. An ugly truth, is that while violence committed against Israelis is broadcast widely, the violence regularly committed against Palestinians is generally unreported. News of many recent Palestinian deaths, attacks, and hate crimes have never reached our screens, and as such, most are unaware of their existence. Its therefore sometimes difficult for people to recognize that this is a tragedy within a network of other ongoing and often commonplace tragedies. A realistic understanding of the larger picture is essential to creating legitimate, lasting solutions. I realize my words could be twisted against me, but its important that I speak the truth. As Americans, we have a hand in these events through the political machinations and direct support of our government. To create a better tomorrow, we must understand and learn from the failures of today. thanks to Yonah for her powerful words.
