Another unfinished railroad: the Dunderberg Spiral Railway. Built - TopicsExpress

Another unfinished railroad: the Dunderberg Spiral Railway. Built in the 1890s, and abandoned about 60% completed, it was to be a ten mile long roller coaster, with speeds approaching 50MPH. But not here, though. This is the high 180 degree turn coming out of the only hard rock tunnel. I didnt measure it with a tape, but Id say that the tunnel is about 40% completed. The cut on the other side is done, as is this curving fill. The view from here is gorgeous. On a clear day, you can see the towers of New York City. They spent the equivalent of $24 million bucks on it. It was a short steamboat ride up the Hudson from New York City. They were going to have piers and docks and a resort and restaurant on the bottom, and a hotel and tavern on the top. The slope was such that a steam train could go backwards up the downward grade to reach the top with supplies for the hotel and tavern. Search this group for Dunderberg for other pictures Ive posted.
