Another untimely young death due to Cancer, and I am wondering why? And How can it be no more…. It is her today can be any of us tomorrow, a death specifically if it is young and untimely leaves behind irrecoverable heart aches and loved ones forever dealing with the loss. Yes we believe life and death is in the hands of god, but caring for life is simply in our hands and depends on our lifestyle. The Karachi Cancer Registry: - KCR has registered an increase in the incidence of cancers during the last decade, more apparent in females - Mouth and lung cancer top the list among Karachi males - The incidence of breast cancer is very high in Karachi; the highest in Asia. One out of every nine women is at the risk of breast cancer, the prevalence of which is the highest amongst all cancers in Pakistan. Every year breast cancer kills 40,000 women in Pakistan - Next comes the Gastrointestinal cancers followed by other types Remember the following: 1- If our parents or siblings suffered from cancer we are at very high risk of developing too. This means extra ordinary care 2- All fried and charred BBQ food is carcinogenic 3- Cooking anything in oil that boils is carcinogenic because the composition of oil changes at high heat (watch out your fried pakoras, samosas and rolls in ramzan) 4- Eat plenty of food that has have phytochemicals and antioxidents found in fruits and raw lightly cooked vegetable, specially green vegetable like different salads, broccoli, and herbs (mint coriander, basil, oregano) all grow wild in Karachi. These prevents certain cancerns. Beans and whole grains (unpolished and processed) are excellent choices and can replace meat. 5- Consumption of seeds like basil seeds, and flax seed meal are great addition in regular meal plans. Available very cheap in Karachi 6- Fish oil is another source of breast cancer prevention 7- At any cost avoid Hydrogenated Ghee/Oil (that horrible commercial ‘Amma Tullo May Pakao” is sheer lie. It can block arteries of ‘amma’ and ‘bacha’ both and the entire family. These are Trans fatty acids and are known as the most harmful type of dietary fats. A lot of our bakery products have this kind of fat. 8- Sugar is the next bad guy in our meals, sugar feeds cancer cells and is a starting point of many disease. 9- Cut down red meat from meals, and eat like once in a month or so 10- Maintain a healthy weight and 30min of exercise 11- Completely omit all packaged, bottled, boxed, processed food from our kitchen and dining tables I can go on an on however, just one last jist of everything: According to epidemiological and clinical studies, diets affect the occurrence, progress and prevention of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancers, diabetes and hypertension. Don’t read this as piece of fiction, trust me, you are what you eat. Spend money on healthy food rather then expensive medicines and treatments. Choice is Ours!!
