Another update: after the van broke two more belts immediately after starting and the tension rod was replaced and it broke yet another belt a second mechanic was finally called in. This guy discovered a bolt had snapped in the steering column that was somehow messing with the belt. We were told the cheapest and easier way to fix this was to wield (sp?) it back... After waiting a while to find someone who could do that it was discovered that the part is some material that cant be wielded. Now the van is on its way back to the shop to try to have that bolt removed and replaced. My head, neck and arms are burned pretty bad from the sun. I finally walked to a McDonalds and ate for the first time today. Ive since been on the toilet twice.....
