Anothers Truth - On Fears and Doubts - In this segment, Black Feminist Women and Men ask: Are the fears and doubts Alice Walker uncovers still plaguing the black community today? Why or why not? In this discussion, members focus on Chapter 11 – The Glimpse of Life Beyond the Words: On Censorship and Freedom of Speech and Chapter 12 – Sent by Earth: A Message from the Grandmother Spirit, of our text, We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For: Inner Light in a Time of Darkness - Meditations, by Alice Walker. Georgette Moses served as the evenings moderator of the 10-07-14 meeting of The National Black Feminist Book Group. She was joined by Randie Henderson, L. Michelle Odom, Venita Walker, Joel Jones and Kevin Dorival. --------------------------------------------------------------- Interestingly, our exploration of Chapter 11 – “The Glimpse of Life Beyond the Words: On Censorship and Freedom of Speech,” occurred during Banned Books Week, (September 21−27, 2014). Here we learn that the writings of Alice Walker have been the subject of much controversy and censorship, as well as how she feels about it. She shares what she thinks is happening with people who attempt to ban her work; and how she has learned to sit with their fears. Chapter 12 – “Sent by Earth: A Message from the Grandmother Spirit,” explores the experience of bringing life into the world, what it means to be a human being, and what it means to take life away, including the harsh impact on (or mutilation of) our souls. She assures us the Grandmother Spirit is one of balance. --------------------------------------------------------------- Session 2 of The National Black Feminist Book Group began on August 19th, 2014, reading Alice Walkers book, We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting for: Inner Light in a Time of Darkness, with members L. Michelle Odom and Randie Henderson as co-hosts. The book group launched on June 3, 2014 and completed its first session on August 5th. We read Danielle McGuire’s book, At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape, and Resistance - A New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power. (See our video archives at YouTube). The weekly group meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm EST.
