Answer to G-PACT trivia from yesterday. Do you know the origins of G-PACT? How far back do you go? Were/are you part of the yahoogroup? New trivia question soon! How much do you know? What would you like to know? G-PACT just kind of happened. It wasnt really a plan! In 2000, the current president, Carissa, had just graduated from college and was unable to go to grad school as planned. Needing something to do and a way to connect with others, she created a personal website sharing her story. Through that, she was bombarded with messages from others. Feeling overwhelmed with trying to respond to everyone, she decided to start a yahoo support group in September 2000 so everyone could connect with each other and share different experiences. The group grew so much faster than expected. She quickly realized the need for a non-profit to help with various needs being discussed. In January of 2001, she approached the group with the idea and gathered a group of interested people to start exchanging ideas. Official board meetings to create the bylaws, vote on officers, seek out assistance, and create the mission began. She created the website to start getting the word out and it started to really grow at that point with some of the most active members of the support group working together on it. The president initially said she would help get it started, but then needed to hand it over to someone else, but that never became a possibility as it got so big. Weve had our ups and downs as Carissa had to back out for three years because of receiving a five organ transplant and the Vice President, who took her place, passed away during that time too, but G-PACT survived that challenge with the help of two deducted volunteers, Lila and Colleen, and the president returned in 2007 with just $256 in our bank account and little desire to keep it going. However, the demand was too great and the need too high, so she jumped back in with additional help. Once we joined Facebook, we really took off. The current Vice President, Mike, was connected with politicians and we started to become very politically active, too. So, G-PACT really did just kind of happen. It started out as a hobby and ended up turning into something none of the founders anticipated. Thirteen years ago, we did not expect it to still exist or making as big of an impact as it is! All G-PACT personnel are volunteers who have severe DTP. Most are unable to work outside the home and need a purpose in life and want to ensure that no one has to do this alone.
