Answer to Guess the Diagnosis One person got the correct - TopicsExpress

Answer to Guess the Diagnosis One person got the correct answer, which is surprising because this one is really difficult and involves an element of trickery! Vanessa Donnelly correctly answered bone cyst. Congratulations Vanessa; if you message us your address your Tims gift card will be in the mail. This is a radiograph of the same patient 5 months later. While the obvious answer is a tumor called an osteosarcoma, that answer is also obviously wrong. Probably 95% or greater of general practise veterinarians would have immediately diagnosed this definitively as an osteosarcoma and recommended either euthanasia or amputation. The fracture is actually a normal anatomical structure called the nutrient foramen and is a tunnel that the blood vessels supplying the bone run through. Good job to those of you who noticed it though. The moral of this story is that as veterinarians our decisions can and often do have grave consequences for being wrong. A cavalier approach to this case and diagnosing this dog with the obvious cause without careful thought as to the possible alternative explanations would have been catastrophic. This case actually occurred 2 years ago in our hospital. The dog is still alive, healthy and doing fine with no after-effects from the now healed bone cyst. Thanks to everyone who played - they were all good answers. Hope you had fun even if you didnt guess correctly this time. Well post another challenge soon.
