Answer to yesterdays Grammar Challenge on the sentence, Neither of your grandfathers have typical hobbies, i.e., fishing, whittling, or stamp collecting. ***** Lots of good attempts here, folks. Right or wrong, I am always impressed by the number of you willing to take a stab at it. Two problems here. First, HAVE should be HAS. This is one of those tricky sentences that makes it hard to spot the verbs subject. Its not GRANDFATHERS, because GRANDFATHERS is the object of the preposition OF. That means the subject is the pronoun NEITHER. And NEITHER, like EITHER, is always singular and requires the singular verb, HAS. Second, i.e. Should be e.g. This a subtle distinction sometimes, but i.e. means that is or in other words, while e.g. means for example. This latter makes more sense in the context. The punctuation is correct. Forget that e.g. has periods and treat it just like you would the phrase for example. It would require commas here.
