Antietam National Battlefield is located off MD-65 outside Sharpsburg, Maryland. It is maintained by the National Park Service. Antietam National Battlefield is a tribute to all the soldiers who lost their life during the battle in 1862. In fact, the battle on September 17, 1862 is known as the bloodiest battle in American history, killing and wounding more than 23,000 soldiers in a single day. Because of this, many believe Antietam is haunted. There have been numerous reports of park visitors and employees seeing the ghosts of Civil War soldiers. Cannon fire, gunshots, and drums are also frequently heard. Many people also claim to smell gunpowder and smoke. One of the most haunted areas is Bloody Lane. Bloody Lane is a sunken road that played an important role in the battle. Many soldiers lost their lives trying to secure the road, reports say that the road was filled with dead bodies (stacked five feet deep) by the end of the day - thus the nickname.
