Antivirus – Malware and Spyware Protection Remove spyware and viruses from your PC or MAC Detect spyware and viruses on your PC or MAC Install and configure antivrus and security software Update software to protect against security threats Install software to assist in updating Install software to detect programs that are vulnerable We Get rid of this type of infection If your computer screen is flashing screens like you see in the graphic above, you probably have an infection. Most of these infections are what we call malware and they also are known to bring in a more difficult to detect and remove infection that is called a Rootkit. These threats can be removed by professionals without too much issue most of the time but sometimes they damage the operating system to the point that re-installation of Windows is the only option. In these cases, we backup files and program licenses and re-install the Operating System, programs and data. Many computer users consider all of these harmful programs to be a virus because they make the computer appear to be sick. Within the industry the technical differences are noted but the term “virus” is still accepted despite being inacurate in most cases. We don’t typically see a virus anymore. The newer infections are generally variations of malware programs that the user installs either intentionally or after being misled as to the true intention of the program. Usually a user clicks on something to start the process. However malware can install itself by taking advantage of a program that contains a security flaw. It is important to keep computer programs up to date. When a program is vulnerable, it is like an open window in a car. If the window is down it doesn’t matter if the door is locked. Likewise ALL antivirus software is ineffective on a computer running insecure software. One way to reduce virus infections is to assess vulnerabilities. It is estimated that 30%-50% of infections are the result of exploits of Oracle’s Java software. It is believed that 100% of current threats attempt to exploit vulnerabilities in Adobe Acrobat and Reader. These vulnerabilies are in older versions but have been corrected in the newer versions. Keeping the programs up to date or knowing they are vulnerable is the most overlooked method of defense. An excellent tool is Secunia Personal Software Inspector. Secunia software is something that the typical computer user can benefit from using. Even if you only patch some of your problems, you are that much more secure. It is estimated that about 70% of computers that are infected with a virus are running Windows XP. Windows XP came out over 10 years ago in 2002 and lacks core security features to defend itself from the latest security threats. Keeping the Operating System up to date and running a modern Operating System reduces the likelihood of infection. Often overlooked is the value of knowing what insecure programs are on the computer. Computer Works can setup your computer with simple tools that require very little effort to use so that you can spend your time productively and enjoying your computer experienc
