Anton Bruckner, the great Austrian composer, was born this day in 1824. Known for his symphonies, masses and motets, he is much loved by all choral singers for his wonderful motets, some scored with just trombone accompaniment. It was his glorious Os justi that first brought him to my attention as an 9 year old choirboy in Exeter Cathedral. The power and beauty, the light and shade of the motet brought tears of emotion to my inexperienced eyes. Later in life, when Counterpoint sung for the first time in Brittany to a large audience at Saint-Yvi, that emotion returned. As the choir lifted their voices at the meditabitor section for the first time - like the early-morning sun breaking over the horizon - I had to blink back the tears of emotion that this piece inevitably brings when the sopranos blossom on a top A and the basses sonorous bottom F progresses upwards. He was a master of dynamics, from the quietest pianissimo to the most glorious and uplifting forte. youtu.be/KL9ToBIME7M
